College Mental Health among Adult Youth

Updated: May 6, 2020

Youth adulthood in college are the best times to address mental health issues. According to Mason, Zaharakis, and Benotsch (2014), "young adults report higher rates of major depressive episodes in the past year (8.2%) than adolescents or adults older than 25 years" (p.471). This is alarming and can help to better understand the different treatment programs for different age groups.

College students who really need assistance "only 43% received mental health treatment compared with 67% of the general adult population" (Mason et al., 2014, p. 471).

This is critical because receiving mental health treatment can make a difference. College students are more likely to lead to substance abuse if they do not have access or can not receive treatment. Aforementioned, the topic of mental health issues and treatment need to be brought up for discussion so there can be a solution.
