Depression: An emergence of a weight that is not seen or felt except in the mirror of one's psyche.

Updated: May 6, 2020

Depression is an illness that is more common than most individuals understand. It impacts the lives of the majority of the populace. It cannot simply be cured by a vaccine, but instead exists as a possibility throughout life prepared to emerge at any point. To understand how one can resist depression it is important to understand what it is and its prevalence throughout the world. I will discuss how depression is rising in the world and how an individual can determine if somebody may be suffering from symptoms of depression. Depression is widespread across the world. As depression has been monitored,

The World Health Organization stated that in 2008 major depression was the third cause of burden of disease and that it will become first by 2030 (Malhi & Mann, 2018).

Depression does not have any specific target. It will ignore race, religion, class, or age; it is a universal equalizer that can overwhelm anybody at any time. The lifetime risk of having at least one depressive episode is between 15-18% (Malhi & Mann, 2018). In addition to that, the greatest chance of a first depressive episode is from adolescence to early adulthood as a mental, physical, and emotional transformation occurs when children are moving into adulthood. Once an individual suffers from a single depressive episode "...almost 80% of patients experience at least one further episode in their lifetime" (Malhi & Mann, 2018). Depression results in a set of emotions that are not easily explained and should be diagnosed. The basis of diagnosis is based upon two different systems of classification of diseases. These two are the Diagnostic and Statistics Manual of Mental Disorders, and the International Classification of Diseases. Due to the severely debilitating effects of depression, it must be handled appropriately by a mental health professional. Symptoms include but are not limited to, fatigue, loss of appetite, changing of weight, sleeplessness, loss of enjoyment, and suicidal thoughts. Depression must be considered as a life-altering disease such as cancer, diabetes, or any other commonly known ailment as it can have drastic effects if handled improperly or ignored. Depression is a life-altering illness that affects the lives of many across the world. The first step in treating the issue is to understand what it is and the damage it can cause. If more of the populace can understand the basics of it and its seriousness then we can give help to those that need it. Less of the sufferers will feel like they cannot speak about it or nobody will understand. If you observe somebody that displays the tell-tale signs of depression, link them to the closest professionals. Professionals can range from mental health counselors to something as simple as the counselors at your university.
